So that was a bad merge but it seems like the truck was content to push for quite a while? Did he not see the car? It’s only 3 second before he starts slowing down I guess, but that’s a pretty bad reaction time?
In any event:

I couldn’t tell what was going on, unless the trucker was simply uncomfortable stopping due to traffic conditions behind him/her, and figured the car was already stuck “safely” in the grille.
I’m sure it does take a hella long time to stop one of those things.

While the car driver was the main person to blame, he isn’t the only one : T o me it looks like the truck was definitely too close from the car in front as it was raining and i t took him more than 2 0 seconds for a full stop with some additional braking in front of him .
In here, trucks are limited to 100KPH on the highway if under 3.5 tonnes (including the cargo) and 90KPH (55MPH) if over and trucks are only allowed on the 2 rightmost lanes (w he n there are 3 or more) , even to pass (which obviously would have not changed a thing here) .

There was the garbage truck in the right lane. The truck drive had to make sure the right lane was clear before moving over. Given the traffic and the wet roads, I think he came to a stop reasonably quickly.
I had a friend who did that merge in a Honda CRX. He ended up with his driver’s window smashed out and the truck’s grille almost against his face. It turns out a sideways car is fairly stable on the front of the truck. My friend got a long ride down the highway until the truck drive realized he had hit something. This was 20 years ago when trucks had higher hoods and you wouldn’t see a CRX from the cab.
My friend just replaced the window and drove around for years with a door that look like it had been attacked with a cheese grater.

Seems like there is another video of the incident :

You’d be surprised how quickly an 80,000 pound 18-wheeler can bring the whoa. It was a big eye-opener when I had my brief stint as a truck driver.

I do recall seeing some pretty amazing braking on video once, but the truck had no trailer at the time.

The truck I was driving was a pretty bare-bones ‘01 Freightliner day cab with no ABS. Running bobtail, it just wanted to lock up the brakes if you weren't cognizant of the lightness. It was so much easier to stop with a full trailer behind it, believe it or not.
